Climate change adaptation of Kolding Bypark
Innovative project that creates attractive urban spaces
The low-lying area in and around Kolding Bypark becomes inundated during heavy rainfall. The aim of the project was to adapt parts of Kolding City Centre to climate change by delaying runoff in Byparken during heavy rainfall and using it to create more attractive local common areas, while reducing flooding in the surrounding homes.
Sweco advised Kolding Municipality in the adaptation of Kolding Bypark to climate change. The vision was to create solutions for handling surface water that can withstand climate change and also have recreational value for citizens and users. Sweco was a lead consultant from the idea phase to commissioning the park, including extensive stakeholder involvement.

Rainwater as a resource
Kolding Bypark is an innovative example of how to design attractive urban environments and urban spaces for all citizens through early and ongoing user involvement, while integrating climate change protection. The Kolding Bypark climate change protection project encompasses new paths, trees, bridges and flowers, which invite recreation, while protecting Kolding from climate change and making the park even more vibrant.
The Bypark climate protection project consists in part of a watercourse along the bottom of a rainwater basin. The watercourse winds around the park, and is surrounded by a flowery meadow and a basin, which relieves the Marielund drain – one of Kolding’s three large rainwater drains, which can hold up to 4000 cubic meters of water. Kolding Bypark is exploiting the need for climate protection and the rain as a resource. Sweco has designed the attractive urban park, offering new recreational spaces and meeting areas, and features like city gardens, a fire pit and hammocks, while using the rainwater to ‘beautify’ the park.
User involvement
By involving the local population and other stakeholders, we have been able to design an urban park that meets the needs and wishes of locals for an attractive urban park that people of all ages will want to use. The park also provides room for play and contemplation to this end.
