Køge
Køge soil depot and harbour expansion
Expansion of the Port of Køge
A major expansion of the Port of Køge is expected to be completed in 2021 which involves the establishment of a soil depot that will eventually form part of the port area. The aim of the port expansion and establishment of Køge Soil Depot is to increase the port area by using uncontaminated and lightly contaminated soil from local construction projects.
Køge Soil Depot is located in the southern part of the port area and spans some 42 hectares. The project is carried out in conjunction with the Municipality of Køge’s urban development of former port areas south of the existing port and offers attractive opportunities for local businesses and citizens and the many visitors to the area.

Sustainable urban development
During the expansion of the commercial port, the Municipality also had a firm focus on sustainable urban development. The expansion of the Port of Køge helps to improve conditions at the port and develop the city to make it more attractive. The expansion of the Port of Køge is based on a strong commitment to sustainability while taking into account future climate scenarios. In addition, special focus is on reusing excavated material and contaminated soil. Much of the excavated material is reused as an underwater depot – which is now used as fill for the Unit terminal. In addition to the establishment and maintenance of a depot for lightly contaminated soil, Sweco also provides assistance in connection with projects on the use of clean soil for new recreational areas around the marina as well as for a 600-metre long and 10-metre high embankment between the forthcoming commercial port areas and the recreational areas around the marina.
Sweco’s services
Sweco is involved in the expansion of the Port of Køge and the establishment of a soil depot, and advises the Municipality of Køge/Port of Køge on the construction of the Unit terminal/freight terminal, which spans a further 20 hectares, breakwaters, recreational areas and beaches north of the Port of Køge. Among other things, we are responsible for environmental impact assessments, wave and current modelling, marine and aquatic environment monitoring programme and geotechnical surveys, and we have also helped some of the first tenants in the reclaimed depot area with the design of tank installations on pile foundations and surface coverings.
