A versatile multi-arena
In the architecture, the main idea has been to consider Boxen as an ‘experience machine’ with built-in versatility and flexibility. In this way, the central arena in Boxen can be transformed according to the event. The multi-arena is designed to accommodate up to 15,000 spectators.
In a machine, form and function are closely related, and it is therefore honest and often sober in its expression. This starting point has had a major impact on the building’s architectural expression – this is reflected in the choice of materials and in the functional layout. In the Box, this rational approach can be seen in the visible constructions, optimized areas and simple choice of materials. The result is a building form that reflects the interior of the house.
The slanted facades show the use of the building. Functionally, there is a need for more space in the ground level than on the other floors. All visitors must enter on the ground floor, but upwards the crowd will dissipate. At the same time, the conical building shape helps to create Boxen’s good acoustic conditions, which are recognized by concert organizers as being some of the best in Europe.
Our vision was to give the audience a total experience regardless of the arrangement, which can be seen in the design of the large flex stands that can be combined and changed in arrangement.
