Erdenet

Climate resilience project in Mongolia

Erdenet suffers from severe flooding

Erdenet, Mongolia’s second largest city, experiences annual flooding caused by frequent and heavy cloud bursts on the surrounding mountain slopes, in particular during the summer period. The floods are exacerbated by inadequate construction of culverts, drains or protection channels and the impact is particularly felt by the poorer population living in the informal settlements surrounding the city centre.

The floods have over the last years inflicted severe damage to houses, other infrastructure and livestock and has also been the cause of deaths. The city therefore plans to improve the situation through the refurbishment and building of flood control and conveyance structures and systems.

Sweco has prepared a detailed study for flood control and improvement of water supply

Sweco has prepared a feasibility study for the project including an outline design for the construction of small dams and embankments with water retention structures and improvement of alleviation channels; the idea being to slow down the flow of water and ensure it can be led away safely.

Bridges and culverts will be improved, and we also proposed improvements to the operation and maintenance of the system. In addition, we have prepared a feasibility study for improvement of water supply in some of the informal settlements.

The project has been costed and undergone a detailed environmental and social assessment. The project is expected to be implemented in 2021-2022.
