A key element in a city’s attractiveness is the ability of its residents to travel safely and efficiently. Sweco’s infrastructure experts have what it takes to design transport systems that simplify people’s everyday lives. By designing everything from transportation hubs, roads for both cars and bicycles, railways and subways to bridges, tunnels, ports and marinas, we improve accessibility in tomorrow’s communities and cities.

Bicycle traffic

Bicycle traffic is given high priority in Denmark, particularly in urban areas where safe, smoothly flowing bicycle traffic plays a key role. An efficient, high-class network of bicycle tracks and paths is necessary for enhancing mobility in central urban areas. Sweco helps by providing viable, future-oriented solutions for bicycle traffic, which not only help enhance cyclist safety and smoothly-flowing bicycle traffic, but also accessibility and security, which are essential parameters in efforts to get more people to cycle.

Safe solutions to promote bicycle traffic

Sweco can assist in conceptual development, planning, design engineering and implementation of all types of bicycle projects, particularly focusing on cyclist safety, security and smoothly flowing traffic – from bicycle superhighways in densely populated urban areas to analyses of routes to and from schools.

Whenever we plan new bicycle tracks or paths or improve existing conditions, we base our efforts on technical analyses of traffic conditions, including technical light-signal solutions, but we also incorporate knowledge of cyclist behaviour and include targeted campaigns designed to promote cycling and retain cyclists who have already chosen the bicycle as their primary mode of transport.

New bicycle action plan?

Municipalities apply bicycle action plans and path/route planning when planning bicycle tracks and paths in urban and rural areas. Sweco has broad-based experience in drawing up such plans and subsequently implementing the construction projects. Sweco can be responsible for the overall preparation of a bicycle action plan or for subsidiary analyses which the municipality wishes to commission in connection with reinforcing the basis of the bicycle action plan.

The visions behind the action plans at the individual municipalities differ; Sweco focuses on finding the right solutions that can implement the individual municipality’s vision in the best possible way.

Sweco can assist in:

  • Preparing bicycle action plans and route/path planning focused on aspects such as smoothly flowing traffic.
  • Conceptual development, planning, design engineering and implementation of projects relating to bicycle traffic.
  • Planning, designing and construction of bicycle paths and superhighways, bicycle parking facilities and bicycle-friendly urban spaces
  • Performing traffic-safety and accessibility inspections
  • Designing traffic signals and intelligent transport systems and services (ITS)
  • Safeguarding routes to and from schools, including analysing and planning school routes and paths
  • Consultancy on cycling behaviour
