Building Engineering

Building engineering is largely a matter of security. Sweco’s structural engineers create buildings that are safe to live and work in and that stand the test of time. Sweco takes a holistic approach and ensures that load-bearing structures harmonise with the building’s design and intended indoor environment - whether we are dealing with a new build, reconstruction or renovation.

Structural Vibrations and Monitoring

People often experience undesirable swaying in buildings as poor comfort. The annoyance can vary from irritation and discomfort to being outright harmful. In addition, there is a risk of structural damage and corresponding impairment of a building’s utility value. This is why dealing with these problems is crucial for our well-being, both when we are at work and not at work.

Construction projects frequently subject adjacent structures to substantial vibrations. This can occur during the construction of new buildings, the refurbishment/demolition of existing buildings or the construction of traffic facilities. For this reason, the authorities or the client’s insurance company often stipulate requirements for the monitoring of vibrations.

Sweco provides monitoring of noise and vibrations, the results of which are logged and filed on an ongoing basis. If relevant thresholds are exceeded, this can trigger an alarm (sent by text message, for instance), which makes it possible to react in time. The customer gets direct digital access to the measuring station to keep track of current levels.

Sweco can assist in:

  • Vibration monitoring of buildings during construction work
  • Evaluating the noise impact on people and evaluating structural-damage criteria
  • Trouble-shooting in the event of swaying problems
  • Experimental determination of natural frequency, type of natural oscillation and vibration damping, e.g. on grandstands, walkways, floors and stairways
  • Advice for the setting up of vibration-sensitive equipment in laboratories, manufacturing facilities and hospitals
  • Advice for the installation of vibrating equipment, such as compressors, cooling systems, etc.
