As part of the development of the Växjö Station area, Sweco’s architects have designed a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the tracks with a connection down to the platform. The transparent and open design imparts a sense of reassurance and clarity.
Client: The Swedish Transport Administration and Växjö Municipality
Lead architect: Ola Arnholm
The transformation of the Växjö Station area frees up new areas which make it possible to condense the urban area, thereby establishing an attractive area at the centre of Växjö. To support urban development and interconnect important functions across the railway, such as residential areas, a bus terminal and workplaces, two new attractive crossing are being established for pedestrians and cyclists.
The transparent and open design of the two bridges – the existing eastern bridge which will be rebuilt and the newly constructed western bridge – imparts a sense of reassurance and clarity to users. Solid laminated-wood structures create spaciousness in the bridges and also make it possible to have views of the city from the bridge. As part of the station conversion process, the entire station area has been given new platform roofing, which is configured to meet the new scale that the centre area will have. Sweco has closely collaborated with the municipality and the Swedish Transport Administration.
